Story from my time in management

This is from about 20 years ago. I was approached by a manager from another company which was similar to where I worked. They were looking for a person to take over their inventory management. When I went there for the interview, they questioned my familiarity with what was necessary to have on hand, talked about the crews I would have to supervise, etc. It looked pretty good until they told me I would work with the current inventory manager and after he had trained me, I was to fire him. Realizing that if they did this to him, a long term employee who they were trying to get rid of before he drew pension, I would probably wound up being in that employee's shoes down the road. Several years later, while talking to my neighbor who had recently retired, I realized this is the person that was going to be replaced. Evidently they were unable to find someone to replace him and he was able to retire.

My neighbor only lived a year after retiring after being diagnosed with cancer within a few months of retiring. Had I taken the position I'm sure that would have been a burden on my mind for years.
