Supervisor demands a detailed explanation of why coworker called off.

So, this happened to my coworker within the last week. We work in EMS which is a 24/7 job. We have about 13 people at our center, with a mandatory 2 hours of overtime every week, as well as nonmandatory OT to cover calls offs, staffing for busy weekends, sickness, etc. We recently all worked a 50 hour work week due to training. No biggie. A few weeks ago, head supervisor puts out an email that all time off requests will be denied to combat unnecessary OT. We are over our fiscal budget this year, so this measure will be in effective until the start of the new fiscal year (July 1st). A few weeks ago, head supervisor puts out an email that all time off requests will be denied to combat unnecessary OT. We are over our fiscal budget this year, so this measure will be in effective until the start of the new fiscal year (July 1st). My coworker had put in a time off request back in April for a day in June. Once this email came out, they checked their request and realized they put the wrong date. Our system does not allow us to modify PTO requests, so they had to put a new one in. It was denied the week before the date of the request. So, coworker calls off. Coworker comes back to work with an email from the head supervisor that we were all aware of the circumstances and that this was an unexcused call off. Supervisor tells coworker that they “need a detailed email explaining what the unexpected medical issue was that fell in line with your denied time off”. Coworker now also has a meeting to “discuss the issue”.

I told him to take the email to HR and another coworker told him to not go into a meeting without a union rep. This supervisor has also made several comments about us not getting paid if we don't submit our time cards on time. My center literally busts our fucking asses, working 12-18 hour shifts at a time in order to keep things running properly. In our last pay period, I had the lowest amount of OT, clocking in at 100 hours. One of my other supervisors showed that they had clocked 171 worked hours (we get holiday pay as well, but still). I know this, because he sent out an email of our cumulative hours, breaking it down between each employee.

Insulting.
