So to paraphrase, I’ve worked at a warehouse for the last 4 years and we recently suffered a heartbreaking loss for a union vote (we lost by 9 votes). During the time when the petition for a union vote was made, the company stopped all direct hire activity and brought in a gigantic group of temps to keep up with the increasing production demand. So we have a lot of temp employees who are all really hard working people and lot of them seem to come from desperate need for a job.
Well I guess now we get to the shitty part. Every year around thanksgiving or Christmas our company orders a bunch of frozen turkeys for employees to take home, this year they did it for Christmas. Well the exact day the turkeys were suppose to arrive was largely unknown but the supervisors kept announcing that they’ll “be here soon” and absolutely zero information otherwise.
Well last week on Thursday the turkeys show up but I decided I didn’t wanna get one cause we didn’t need it, we’re going out of town for Christmas. Well Friday comes along and I catch wind from my buddy that the temp employees weren’t allowed to get a turkey. This of course has him mad and has me pretty mad too; how could they do this? They never said anything about temp employees not getting a turkey till the DAY they arrived. A lot of temp employees were relying on getting a Turkey to feed their family for Christmas, some were almost in tears over it. My supervisor even talked to me about it and told me how disgusted she was by the email she received where they were asking her and other supervisor to “stand guard and make sure no temp employee gets a turkey”. This got me even more fired up. At the end of the day me and my friend had decided to go get a turkey (cause he didn’t grab one either) and gave them to temps who were wanting a turkey.
The whole thing had me so irrationally angry, denying people food breaks my heart. Especially when these people are acting as “disposable” labor for you greedy fuckheads. They’re working people just Ike us full employees, why are they being treated like trash? If I could I would have grabbed as many turkeys as I could carry and give them out. The worst part is that after all the direct employees received turkeys there were still a ton of turkeys left and instead of giving them out they sent them either back to l where they came from or to a food bank.
I fucking hate the mistreatment of temp employees and I feel a even heavier hatred for the company I work for now. Don’t get me started on the shit the company pulled when we were trying to unionize.
