This is one of the nuggets I dropped in an interview today and honestly, this was the most comfortable I've ever been in an interview.
This was my response when I was asked “why are you looking to leave your current job” and I basically said “I'm not” followed by the title. I've always maintained that honesty is the best policy even in situations where it reflects poorly on you, and in fact especially in those situations because that's when you build trust.
Other things I said which probably would have my old managers facepalming were, when asked if I'm just going to try and get a new job in a year after being hired, “that depends on you guys”, as in what are you willing to do to keep me around? This is a great opportunity to reference their competitive pay that they like to advertise, if they're so competitive, then compete.
Here's the crazy thing though, is that I've built my career on this honesty, I told my old manager once that I planned to “get some experience as an engineer and then move to a different company” and they huffed….but then a few months later I finished my degree and he asked what engineering job I wanted so he could push for it…and then 2 years later I started working for a different company.
It doesn't always work, for example I was informed I didn't get this job, but then when I got more information about what the job was I was glad I didnt (temp, nights, 12 hour shifts, for the same pay I'm getting now? Girl bye).
Maybe I'm nuts but I recommend doing interviews when you're comfortable staying at your current job and when you can afford the luxury of not giving a fuck if you get a new one. If nothing else it's a wild experience watching their heads spin when you give them answers they don't expect
