The longer your job titl-e, the more likely you’ll get chopped as soon as there is a down turn in the business

I recently spoke with an old friend who I started working with in my early twenties. I left the company after 5 years and moved on with my career. He opted to stay and it made sense since he was looking to get married and the business was growing fast. Fortunately it worked out for both of us. When we spoke recently, he mentioned his position was in danger due to cuts and all. At the start of the call, I made reference to his new job title he got a year ago and it was certainly longer than necessary. After he told me about his situation, I felt bad of course but it made me realise the old story about the monkey climbing too high up the tree, only to get exposed. In this case my friends job role became so inflated it literally cost the business twice as much keeping him than replacing him but now his at a cross road and doesn't know to stay in the career path he's chosen or do something new.
