I've just about had all I can take. I tried my hand at consulting, and I'm starting to think I need to figure out a way to make it work because, after three months on the job market, I've decided that all the stuff I don't like (quotes, contracts, invoicing, self-employment taxes) are worth the annoyance to avoid the games and lack of common courtesy. To make myself feel better, I started a list of reasons why I have withdrawn applications. Of course, I didn't say these things “out loud” because I'm not a fan of burning bridges, but I did find tactful ways of retreating. Here is my list so far. I'm interested in hearing from others about why they turned down or didn't follow through with their applications.
