This is so exhausting

I currently teach at a university, but the pay is insultingly low. I applied for the post of a part-time English trainer at a large company to make ends meet, with the idea that if things became too much, I could gradually work corporate full time. During my interview, I was candid about the amount of time I could give them, which was matched the 20 hours they needed with the exception of the rare university events here and there. They were very enthusiastic about me and the fact that I had some previous experience with corporate training. They called me in a for a demo class, and it went well (was up till 2 AM making slides). The managers were super friendly, but then began to hint at preferring that I join there full time. I mentioned that at the moment I was looking for something part-time (as their ad stated) but would be open to the idea of working full time eventually. They said HR would get in touch with me, then radio silence.

Today I heard from a friend working there that they weren't going to take me. My question is: why waste so much of my time after the interview, if you weren't going to hire me? Why do you expect someone responding to a part-time position to be work full-time?
