Thoughts on businesses responding to negative reviews on Glassdoor/Indeed??

I just quit my job but when I was still working there a coworker mentioned that they worked at another local business before, and it was living hell. So one day I decided to search any employee reviews and a very negative one (multiple employees put it together after five of them quit in one week) the company responded and basically just undermined their experience and made ex employees seem unreasonable when I have heard from so many people that it’s horrible there. They also respond to positive ones but the whole concept is very weird to me. The place I just left is a whole other can of worms but it seems like it’s a better environment.
