Tips on how to explain that you can be a hard worker without doing things out of your job description?

I work 4 months of the year at a tax office. The team lead there is a good friend of mine but she is about twice my age and while pretty liberal with most things she has these ideas about labor that you can tell have been put in her head since birth. For instance if she asks you to stay late and you don't she makes up her mind that you are not a good worker. Now in this business most people only work these 4 months and everyone stays constantly if there is work to do… bc they are otherwise retired etc. But receptionists are usually younger, they don't get commission, and they are off to another job when this one is over. I'm pretty terrible at debating things with people I forget all sense and logic…. do you have any simple way to say how messed up…

Please don't say “nope no way to talk to this kind of person” because she isn't just an idiot manager and she really does care about people and goes way out of her way for them all the time. I guess the difference is that she sees staying late as helping her out as she helped you, but we see it as helping the company and we don't care.
