Toxic air working conditions

The air in the Midwest and the east coast is categorized as “unhealthy” and scaled as such on the AQI (Air Quality Index). I work in a restaurant with a small patio. Can my employer require me to work outside in these conditions? Furthermore, it’s a small part of our restaurant (about 8 tables). I would like to convince management to close the patio section until the air quality improves for the health of all my co-workers. What kind of resources can I access to make this happen. It wouldn’t be a large loss of revenue due to the fact that most people are choosing to dine inside anyway.
