Training New Hires

Throwaway for security. Okay, y'all. I work at a Target DC. TBH, it's a pretty good job, exactly what I was looking for to support my wife and I. Highest paying job(20+ an hour) I've ever had just walking in the door, and this is after I moved from a HCOL to a LCOL. I'm an order picker. It's a pretty easy job, the main thing is to stay industrious. I'm good at it. I'm so good at it that they want me to become a trainer just a few months after starting working there. And they do not want to fucking pay me for it. I would be going through more trainings, an evaluation with a supervisor to determine I am able to do this work(I am), and training every single new hire that walks into the Warehouse department how to run the machine(s), gain and maintain efficiency…

I would be going through more trainings, an evaluation with a supervisor to determine I am able to do this work(I am), and training every single new hire that walks into the Warehouse department how to run the machine(s), gain and maintain efficiency in the workday, meanwhile mentoring and modeling behavior.

All for the low low price of the same pay that I gained as soon as I walked in the door those months ago.

I would be assuming more personal risk and liability, while creating value for an already $200B company all for the perk of being taken off of production for a few days out of a week, and MAYBE a promotion to Lead Warehouse Worker or Operations Manager in the future.

Meanwhile, what if I get fired? All of that value that I created for the company stays, those workers that I trained will continue to generate a profit, but all of those promises of potential future personal value to me evaporate immediately.

I'm going to turn down this “promotion” because my bills aren't paid on promises. As my OM so eloquently put it, “We can't run warehouse without trainers.” Stop giving your skills out for free, people.

TLDR: Fight for fair compensation for the value you provide to the workplace. They can only not pay trainers because people are selling themselves short.

Keep your eyes on Target, people.
