Tricked into applying?

I recently interviewed with a large, well known, non-profit organization. Someone on a Facebook group suggested people apply, and they knew the hiring manager. They even shared with me that they considered applying but didn’t because they were very close friends with the hiring manager and thought it might be weird to work for their friend. I thought, “your loss, I guess,” and applied. It was a remote job, amazing benefits, and great pay. They scheduled an interview the same day! The interview process went by fairly quickly, and it was 3 rounds of interviews (phone screen, hiring manager, panel interview – two ppl). For the last interview, I was super prepped, gave impressive answers (according to them), asked great questions that surprised & impressed them, and they even gave me their emails at the end of the interviews. They shared that they wanted someone ASAP, but that the hiring timeline for this job was to have someone by or before the new year. Because it went to well, I thought I really had a chance. They mentioned having had trouble finding people to apply, and I wondered for a moment if I was potentially the only one they were interviewing. It seems ridiculous, but the interviewers never made any mention of other interviewees, and that has happened before with another major company, and they freaked out when I turned down the job. And typically, I have a good inkling on when a job interview has gone badly or well, and this last one was great.

I interviewed on a Friday, and the following Wednesday I received an email saying they moved forward with candidates. I emailed asking for feedback, but at this point, I doubt I’ll get it. Maybe this js all just normal, but I guess I’m just confused? Part of me wonders if that lady needed me to apply so they hit a quota of candidates so her friend could give her the job. Is that crazy??
