For context. Live in VA, At Will employment and work evenings.
I had planned to leave my job the 30th of this month. Originally I was going to give my 2 weeks today. However a co-worker of mine had a serious accident and is going to be out of work for a few months.
In an effort to not completely screw them, I regrettably decided to inform my manager last week of my plans to leave. As that position is a hard one to fill (its evenings, no one wants it).
All is well until today, I wake up with some of the worst food poisoning I've had in years. I inform my manager that I might not be able to make it in and am informed of the problem that causes, which is my manager has to work a double and won't be able to leave early to pick something up for the dept..
I keep him updated throughout the morning as my symptoms progress and get worse. Not to go into too much detail, but there was need for more than one receptacle.
He stopped replying to my updates, and I eventually received the text stating “I feel at this point it would be better if you moved on to your next venture”. I've asked for the reason why and have been given vague run around answers. He finally said I have to much to do to discuss this right now. “It's not malicious it's just best for the dept.”. I fail to see how short-staffing your dept. for an extra 2 weeks is what's best. He's also well known for having anger issues and being short tempered.
I tried to be nice, and he screwed me. Do I have any recourse here, or am I S.O.L.? If I do have any recourse what should I be doing right now to protect myself?
