Understaffing

Back in August I got a job I ended up not particularly caring for, for a few different reasons. One of which was constantly working by myself and being the only person doing one particular task. (Think answering phones while working on a task box that's got about 150 tasks in it at any given time, alone). I thought things had looked up around Thanksgiving, because I was suddenly working with a team of people and work was easier, better even, and I didn't dread going in every day. Stupidly I thought that was the new norm. As soon as Thanksgiving ended, I was back to working completely alone with no team doing everything alone. And wouldn't you know it, I'm back to absolutely detesting work. Why do companies keep doing this shit? Like I guess I understand why but at the same time it makes zero sense to me.
