I’m so mad. These people are scum.
I lost my job early on in the pandemic and had some other stuff going on that triggered a mental breakdown. I filed for unemployment between May and October and fortunately I qualified so I took some time off to get my head sorted out. I’ve been working since I was 16. Never taken any sort of government assistance before this, even though there were definitely times I qualified. I got a job as soon as I was a functioning human again, and immediately stopped filing.
Last month I got a phone call from an adjucator and consequently a letter from the state accusing me of fraud and demanding repayment of $154. $154. That’s less than I pay in taxes in a month. The appeal process was so shitty and stressful, and clearly designed to scare poor people into folding and just paying up.
The best part? I won my appeal because the adjucator failed to recognize a statute that qualifies me as an exception to the rule I allegedly broke. A pretty basic but important statute. How do they have people who don’t know the law in charge of accusing people of breaking the law??? Is the government truly this incompetent or are they actually bold enough to set these cases in motion knowing they won’t hold up but hoping people won’t fight it?
I hate it here. Fuck class traitors.
