Hi, not sure where to post this other than here and maybe my local subreddit (which I would like to not do in case the subject of my post is on reddit and sees it).
So I recently got hired at a place that is part of a local union. They're having voting soon for a position that I can't remember the name of, but its the person who's supposed to fight for their fellow coworkers/employees in our office, make deals on their behalf, etc (this is my first time in a union so I'm really new to all this). There's a certain number of nominees, and a certain number of that number has already been holding the position for a handful of years now, and I've heard a lot of whispers from coworkers about wanting a change.
I've heard both sides in the past week and a half, one stronger than the other, and I know who I am going to vote for already.
The person I'm voting for talked to me on Saturday, in a very respectful, non threatening way. This person told me a few plans they already have to implement some changes in favour of the employees safety, etc.
A person I already knew I wasn't voting for under any circumstances talked to me this morning, as I was trying to leave and he was supposed to be starting his shift. This person more or less told me, “do not vote for these certain people, vote for me and this person, okay?” and after a lot of awkward back and forth that was really just them repeating themselves, they asked me not to tell anyone that he talked to me or what he said. Except aside from telling me who to and not to vote for, all they said was that they got people a .66 cent raise last year.
In an effort to keep this post not too long (it already is, I'm sorry) I'll leave out most of what happened (there was a lot) but basically what I'm wondering is, is what this person said to me against the law of union voting? specifically telling me who to vote for, directly, multiple times, and to not repeat it to anyone (at work)?
I'm from Canada if that changes union voting laws, thank you for any insight!!
