Unpaid Hours Coaching Gymnastics

This isn’t about me, but my best friend who has been a gymnastics coach for a few years at several gyms with similar policies. She gets paid hourly during weekdays, but gets paid for “sessions” during regional competitions and meets which are always on weekends, both Saturday and Sunday. These competitions are often out of state and last literally all fucking day- she has to be there as early at 7:30am and can’t leave until 9 or 10pm. She’s only getting paid when she’s actively coaching her students during their sessions/competitions. It seems like she only gets paid for at most 6 hours, even though she’s stuck at these gyms for 12-14 hours. She has to stay at a hotel for the out of state events (hotels are paid for at least), but she usually has to share a room with 3 coworkers. And then she has to wake up…

And then she has to wake up at Ass-O’clock Sunday morning for another 14 hour day. I know nothing about coaching sports, but this seems wildly unfair. I feel that coaches should be paid from the minute they arrive at the gymnasium until they are allowed to leave. They should be comped for the entire 28+ hours instead of only being paid for at most 8 hours of sessions across two days.
