I started applying for jobs recently. I’ve been with the same company for 5 years. Started my current role a year ago and while I’m not completely unhappy, I feel like I am worth more and can be making more money.
I got all the way to the references stage for one job after interviewing with 9 different people and taking a day off work to meet with some of them in person. It was down to me an one other candidate, and they said they were trying to get approval to hire us both but when that fell through they hired the other person. Annoying but what are ya gonna do.
I got all the way to the references stage with another position, and then I was told that my references weren’t good. I wasn’t given any further information as references are considered confident info. I’m just confused because everyone I asked to be a reference for me enthusiastically resounded “of course!” and commented on how hard I’ve worked and how much I deserve a higher paying job. I worked with those people for 4 years and never had any issues.
I’m so confused and honestly it just hurts. I gave 4 years of my life to that previous job with no issues that I was ever made aware of and have basically nothing to show for it. Now I have to wait at least another year until I feel comfortable informing my current management that I’m looking and hope that they’ll give me good references. If you got this far, thanks for reading.
(Note: I did not list anyone I currently work with – these are all people I worked with in my previous role and they do not know the people I currently work with)
