Had an interview today with a car parts retailer. I applied online and put down under desired salary $15/hr. (I low balled myself just because I’m trying to get out of my current shitty job.) I applied for housekeeping since that’s what I do now. I make $14/hr where I’m currently at. I was called in for an interview and they didn’t offer me house keeping but a position they call customer service. They mentioned duties were stocking, cleaning, warehouse order fulfillment, returns, shipping and receiving. It’s 10-12 hour days, five day weeks. (I don’t see how most of those duties is customer service but okay? Under their career site, customer service was listed as a remote “call center” customer service.
I asked rate of pay and they said we will discuss that during orientation. I pressed for info since it was never stated online, on their site nor indeed.
I finally got an answer and was told $12/hr.
“ I told him, how do you guys to expect me to live off that, working those hours? Even if I would/had to get a second job, I’d never have the time. I am making $14/hr plus tips at my current job. I cannot take anything less than what I currently make.”
He got kind of flustered and told me that I should appreciate that I got an interview and job offer with one of the biggest racing part retailers in North America.
I just stood up, said “thanks for wasting my time that I took off for” and just left.
Like what’s wrong with these places? Rent is already nearly 50% of my income, gas is over $4 and still rising. How the fuck am I supposed to live off $12/hr? It’s hard enough with 14.
I have 10+ years of retail/warehouse/management experience, bachelors degree in telecom engineering (can’t even get a job in my field, $80k in student debt) and I’m supposed to live off $12/hr?
Fuck this system, fuck these companies and fuck this country. I dream of a day where I can watch it crumble and burn.
