Was told it’s normal to work and extra hour or two a day by my new boss

I recently changed jobs for one that offered me too much money to refuse. A lot of the people that work there were actually ex employees from my current work at the time so I was thinking the work culture would be relatively the same… but I was wrong So with my new job I noticed people don’t really take lunch breaks, or coffee breaks. Which I thought was weird but ok. I’ve also been starting work half an hour before everyone and only taking 30mins to each my lunch in the office. A lot of the time I’ve still worked until COB because of meetings and generally people asking for my help. So I’ve been working an extra hour most days since I started. I’ve also been starting work half an hour before everyone and only taking 30mins to each my lunch in the office. So I’ve been working an extra hour most days since I started. Finally one Friday I got sick of it, I had finished all my work that I needed to get done that week and packed up my things and was leaving at 3pm when one of the bosses who had been away most of the day saw me an assumed I was slacking off

On Monday the guy I report to scheduled a meeting to discuss what my expectations were around working hours. I said I expected to work 40 like I’m contracted to do and getting the work done within that timeframe; very occasionally working later when I need to.

He basically went on how that’s not really the nature of the business and that’s not a team player attitude. He said how he and most people in the office usually work an extra hour or two each day and that instead of leaving early on Friday I should see if there’s anyone who needs help

I worked out that if I continue to work an extra hour each day for a year that equates to roughly 6 weeks of extra work for free. Maybe I’m being salty, but they also lied about a bunch of other stuff in the interview…
