Antiwork

Wasting a month of my life waiting for a job, remaining unemployed by the end of it, and writing an essay about it all on reddit.

Sorry for spoiling the ending directly in the title, but it wouldn’t be an antiwork post if it had a happy ending. After I quit and/or got fired from my job (long story), a friend of mine who works at an arcade at the mall said they were understaffed. She said I should apply. Sure, loud, flashy places aren’t really my thing. But at least I could get money & maybe work with my friend sometimes. So i applied at the arcade and waited a few days while my friend pestered the hiring manager “Sarah”(not her real name) to call me back. Over the course of a week, i call twice. Sarah isnt there. Finally I get a call back from Sarah, she wants to interview me. Finally. A couple days pass and I get to the interview, 20 minutes early and everything. Sarah isn’t there, its her day off.…

Sarah isn’t there, its her day off. Yeah, sure, its shitty to schedule an interview with someone when you’re not even going to show up, but the general manager “Tom”(not his real name) steps in to interview me. I wasn’t going to blow him off and ruin my chances.

Interview goes great, albeit suspiciously short. I was talking to him for about 5 minutes, but maybe its because my friend is already in and gave a good impression for me (im still not sure.)
He writes stuff down as I answer questions, answers the questions I have, and says he’ll talk to sarah and get back to me. There wouldn’t be a hell of a lot to talk about, so i figured it wouldn’t be long.

A few days pass, i call, neither of them are there. A few days pass, its the day before I get dragged along to some family shit for a weekend, so i call again. Neither of them are there. I get back from vacation, call again, nobody. A few days pass, i call again, and FINALLY i get to talk to Sarah.

She tells me I’ll need a second interview with both herself and Tom. Which, you know, i wish Tom would’ve told me that instead of ‘ill talk to sarah’. So I ask when she & tom are available. She says “tomorrow, but i’ll have to ask Tom when he’ll be available. Is it ok if I text this number when I hear back?”

At this point im willing to drop everything to go to the interview, so i ignore that I’ll have maybe a few hours notice before having to rush my ass to the mall. Even though I’d have to uproot my entire day & cancel plans in preparation.

The text never came.

So now I’m furious, telling my friend everything thats happened. Friend says she’ll ask sarah if maybe she had the wrong number or forgot. Never heard back about that and told my friend i’m giving up on this.

About a month of my time & energy wasted. My pride is in the gutter from begging and pleading for a job (at place of screaming children & drunk adults no less). I’m in agony from bending over backwards to make time for a wild goose chase interview. I’m back at square one, applying to places again.

I still don’t have a job.

People say that “no one wants to work anymore.” No one wants to sit and twiddle their thumbs, waiting for employment. No one wants to wait for a bunch of disorganized fucks to call back. No one wants to deal with this shit anymore.

Anyway, on the bright side, i have an interview scheduled at another store at that same mall. Wish me luck on that. Maybe theres some hope for a happy ending afterall.
