We really do mess over call center employees

First time in 10 years I’m in an hourly call center job. (I’ve been salary and management in call centers before that.) They told me that if my shift starts at 9, I should be logged in at 8:50 to check email and make sure systems work. But there’s no unauthorized OT. So they want me to do unpaid work before my shift to make sure I can do my work during my shift. I’ve never managed any of my sales call center employees to do that; even when they were salaried I sent them home at end of shift or got them some sort of compensation or “gift” for early or late work. I hate this industry.
