Several years ago I was a nurse working in a long term care facility. One of our job duties was to monitor patients eating in the dining room. I was feeding a pt when I heard a pt yell, “nurse, Mr. Smith is choking”. I, along with another nurse attempted to do the Heimlich maneuver, but was unsuccessful and he lost consciousness, so we lowered him to the floor, and directed another co-worker to call 911. As he’s on the floor, we can see a hotdog lodged in his throat, so the other nurse removed it and the pt regained consciousness, but was sent to the hospital as a precaution. Later on, we were called into the supervisors office and questioned about the incident. Supervisor proceeded to tell us that we were being written up for not following proper protocol, which was to immediately start CPR once pt lost consciousness and for doing a “blind sweep” to remove a foreign object. We explained it wasn’t a blind sweep as we could see the object, and he didn’t require CPR once the hotdog was removed. She didn’t seem to care and wrote us up anyway. So, I was basically written up for improperly saving a man’s life. Left that place shortly after.
