I taught at a total shit district. They got caught in multiple, long-term schemes to steal wages from substitute teachers.
I had four years of experience and a PhD. When I started they told me they would pay me as a first year teacher and a BS, and when the paperwork caught up I would get my back pay. I opened a claim with the Dept of Labour two years ago about it. They kept “losing the paperwork” or “the paperwork wasn't filled out correctly” or “that wasn't what my contract said” (fyi, it did). I told him I would file a claim with the Dept of Labour and he thought that was funny.
Turns out the Assistant Superintendent of HR has been pulling this crap with a lot of teachers. I was making a big stink about it, so they nonrenewed me. I had a new job in less than four hours. When I asked them what about my back pay, he told me “since I wasn't going to be an employee any more they weren't going to pursue it.”
Got my check for about $40k today from the Dept of Labour. I have had this claim open for almost two years, and I was beginning to think it would never come.
Gang tough!
