Context: I was in a company that was sold and was very senior. With my experience, I helped with all company integration, set up the sales process, built all the project management for our services into their PM tool, worked with IT to set up a new data storage practice based on protecting our client PII data, and operationalized a transfer of our clients and marketing materials from our systems to the new ones. This took more than 6 months.
As soon as I finished (successfully) my manager said they wouldn't be keeping me. They were “gracious enough” to give me 4 months notice, but no new work, and transferred much of the work off my plate to allow me to job hunt.
We have unlimited vacation, but I've never taken any because I have to job hunt.
I'm about to get a job that pays the same, but would love to take a break to travel.
What recourse would they have if I just took “vacation” until they fired me, once I have this new position signed? It's not a competitor and not in their space.
What if, worse yet, I took the vacation and then worked my few client calls until the 4 months was up?
