I get paid 9 an hour at a small-town diner in Kentucky which is open only 5 to 6 hours a day. Already horrible pay, especially in this economy, but it gets a hell of a lot worse.
My typical work day is 8 hours, with 3 of those hours being opening and closing the place, yet I only get paid for the 5 hours it's open.
I only get to work an average of three (paid) days a week
On top of that, I am occasionally asked, yet often TOLD to volunteer my time for other forms of labor my boss needs for his business.
I'd quit and demand compensation, but since I haven't worked here for too long, I'd only get a few hundred dollars so far which won't get me back on my feet by a long shot. – So I also need to know whether or not I'm legally allowed to continue working and quietly counting the unpaid wages so that I can get a fatter check when I do finally quit.
It'd be dishonest of me but under the conditions that my boss is PLACING me under, it's literally the only way I can ever afford a car so I can to go back to doordashing.
