“One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure”, don't roast me if you think my job is a dream job.
Let just say, I have to go to work every day, I'm a full time worker in an engineering firm. Typical 8 to 5 hours. What's not so typical is that I have nothing to do. It sounds very nice, but believe me it's not – having nothing to do at work is worst than being swamped with work…
My cubicle is right next to hub of where discussions would go on. My back is facing the corridor so everyone could see my monitors. The cubicle walls are too short, that I can see everyone walking while sitting. There is a printer right next to me, people would print constantly.
It is very weird to just sit there as everyone would see that. I can't use my phone. With that being said, with nothing to do, time passes really slow. But if you have work or tasks to complete, time would pass quicker and those long shifts would feel shorter. Adding to that, the noise created by the constant foot traffic would be less noticeable if I'm concentrated on something.
Why I didn't leave? I can't find a job to replace my current one. I knew I'm underpaid in the position, but it's already better than other jobs (non-engineering) that I can find…
edit: I'm not saying I don't have things to do for few days, but 80% of the time.
