What is the most rational way to think about work ethic?

I live in the US and have had the workethicisallyourworth™ mentality drilled into me since I was young. I feel like I should be working hard all the time or I’m letting others down, going to get in trouble etc. I feel guilty when it’s slow and browse the web or watch YouTube to relax maybe 20% of my time. I’m almost sure that leisure at work isn’t bad and other people probably do it. How do others feel about this and how much do you take pride in your work ethic?
