Hi, I’m a Front End Manager at a supermarket and have been working for this company for 8 years. Up until now, if an employee called out sick, and they used up their sick time, they just wouldn’t get payed for that day.
However, I have an employee that used up all of his sick time for the year already because he was out with the flu earlier this year, among other reasons that were all legitimate. Well he called out last night, and today my store manager asked me why I let him call out. I told her that he’s sick and she replied with “But he used up all his sick time already.”
She then told me that I have to give him a verbal warning today that if he calls out again this year he will be written up. It’s only April. I’ve never experienced this with this company before and it seems excessive. It’s already enough of a consequence that he won’t get paid for the day. I understand that people shouldn’t be able to call out wily nily, but I don’t think that people should be forced to come in when they’re sick either. Especially in a supermarket where we are handling people’s food all day. Not to mention, you’re running the risk of getting the rest of your employees sick too.
I know I’ve seen much worse on this sub, but this doesn’t sit right with me at all and I want to get your thoughts.
