What’s the difference between a career and a job, anyway?

I have a BA and MSc in International Relations. Once I graduated in fall 2020 I was so excited to begin to look for jobs in Washington DC. However, despite all the resume tailoring and passionate cover letters, never heard back. Tried sales, fired for not being able to sell. Fired from my most recent job for “mishandling mail” with no warnings, write ups, or behavioral issues. Now unemployed. I apply for jobs that match my skillset and professional level.

My mother is dead set on me applying for openings at my dad's aerospace company as she considers it a “real career” vs. my “hood” job (my job was at a billionaires nonprofit, not really “hood”). She says that I need a career not a job and to stop applying for jobs similar to the one I got fired from (Admin Assistant). She forgets I live 2k miles away and need a JOB to survive here, or I lose my apartment.

However I need to climb the ladder to blaze a career path. So that requires me to take a entry level job and go. At the end of the day in this rat race, I just want a pay check.

I need your input: What the h*ll is the difference between a career vs. job?! They seem like the same thing!
