What’s the difference between being a slave owner who provides housing and food vs a free market employer who only pays enough for housing and food?

Minimum wage is often only enough to afford the bare minimum of housing and food which is what slaves were provided in most cases, and those who can’t work often aren’t even able to access the bare minimum. So I ask again, what is the difference?
