What’s the point of working if we’ll die?

The title says it all. I’ve been working for about a month now since finishing undergrad. While I’m lucky that I have a substantial amount of free time outside of work, I know many of us don’t have that luxury. And then that got me thinking: we’re on this planet for a limited amount of time. We should soak up all of life’s riches. Eat good food, laugh with our friends and family, travel, love, etc. But we’re bound to work with the threat of starvation and homelessness if we don’t work. And our labor laws in the US are not designed with the betterment of the worker in mind.

And now we find ourselves living through war, a terrible economy, a climate crisis and the remnants of a global pandemic. The only people whose lives have improvised are those of the rich and the oligarchs while politicians do no nothing.

With all these circumstances, why go to work in the first place? We aren’t rewarded for our labor any more, our planet is dying…I mean what is the point? I’m still young and hopeless. My job has no significant meaning other than for it to be another thing on my resume. I dread the idea of working for 40 years and not having much time left for what matters in life.

So why waste our lives for jobs that would replace us instantly if we’re gonna die one day anyway?
