When employers neglect their duty to keep staff safe during snow storm.

A few days ago, we got hit with a massive snow storm. The entire town was closing up shop, including offices in the same industry as mine. Our entire main street (where I work) let their staff go home early by 12:30pm. My boss didn’t let us go home until 3:30pm (a whole whopping hour earlier than usual). We had no clients coming in (they all cancelled) and so my co workers and I spent the afternoon watching car accidents out our windows and doing (non-urgent) paperwork. When my boss finally let us go, she was the first one out the door! I barely made it out of the parking lot before I had to swerve out of the way to miss an oncoming pick-up truck sliding in my direction and went head on into a sign street (which thankfully, saved me from going head on into a brick wall…

It was an accident. No one was at fault and no major damages done, thank god. But I can’t help but be pissed at my employer for not letting us out early when everyone around us was acknowledging the weather warning and leaving. I was stiff and achey all day yesterday. I emailed her saying I’m taking the day off as I’m sore and I have no vehicle at the moment. I told her what happened and all she replied with was “oh how awful!”

Employers have a duty to dismiss staff early when there are weather advisories. PERIOD!
