I have a job that I really like. Most of my coworkers are great and the management has been very helpful as well. Until now. I guess this was too great to last forever.
Due to the some workplace issues, my department had a temporary boss who was supposed to choose the new boss from us employees. There are several very qualified people who have spent many months to years improving this department, working overtimes and organising many projects. I'm still fairly new so I'm not counting myself, despite doing the same (just for the shorter period of time). We didn't know who the new boss would be.
Last month, the new boss was announced. When I first heard his name, I honestly had no idea who he was. And many coworkers didn't either. Those who have been here for a long time had to explain it to us. Turned out that this guy only comes to work twice a month (hence why almost nobody knows him) and had actually been supposed to be fired over it very recently. Instead of doing that, our temporary boss reached out to him and they got talking. The guy apparently told her that he had been bored at work and would like to do some projects which sound interesting. A few specific projects another coworker had spent weeks working on. The boss agreed for whatever reason and the guy took over the projects. Of course, he had no idea what to do with them and had to repeatedly ask more experienced coworkers because he wasn't even able to find and turn on the printer without help.
Fast forward to the last month. This guy was just announced to be a new boss. Several of us protested during that meeting, especially all the experienced and active employees. The guy reacted by giving the entire speech about us being jealous and him doing his best. The former boss defended him and then started listing the reasons why she didn't choose others. She later tried asking us individually in private what we think of her decision. My reaction was hostile. And I wasn't the only one.
Several of us formed a secret group and consider leaving for another department whose boss is willing to accept us. One coworker already did so. The rest of us are hesitant yet disgusted. We don't want out department to fall apart – because it's going to fall apart even if only a few of us leave. We all have spent a long time working our asses off on projects and extra work because we care about this place. Nobody wants to let it go, not yet. It's like building a house, using all your creativity and being proud on it, but then to abandon it. We also reached out to the higher management that is willing to listen to us and solve this whole problem. Given the past experience with them, I trust them. Let's all hope.
As for myself, I just feel betrayed. I actually transferred here from another department whose boss is… well, let's just say “unpleasant” to be around. The temporary boss of my current department allowed me to join and she made it possible for me to use my skills and to participate on interesting projects with more experienced new coworkers. I made good friends here. Yet she chose someone who basically doesn't go to work, doesn't know how the office works, and steals projects and ideas from others. I'm just speechless.
