While on unemployment, I had to sit in on a really annoying Zoom call – a cautionary tale

This call was supposed to teach us how to get a job. The first part was explaining what a resume is. Yeah, because a bunch of full-grown adults on unemployment have no idea what a resume is. So that was stupid. But towards the end, they were going over interviewing practices. One thing they said was to never ask about pay until you actually get the job. We were all muted, but I wrote in the chat that this is terrible advice and it's a huge waste of time to go through multiple interviews without even knowing if this job could sustain you. The hosts ignored my comment and after two hours, the call was over. I had a job lined up so I only went on this stupid call because I didn't want to get penalized for not going.

I ended up getting a letter from Unemployment anyway that said I was going to be investigated because they had no record of me going on the call. How convenient.

I had a contact over there and I sent him a screenshot of my Zoom history and told him if they review the recording, they will see that I was on the entire call and participated as well. He said they don't record calls. I said I had no problem taking this to court. He got back to me and said that sometimes the system “glitches” and they would retract the letter and count me as being there.

This is the second time in a row Unemployment has tried to fuck me over, and failed.

tl;dr: Get proof of EVERYTHING you do while on unemployment, because they will do all they can to get that money back, especially if you dare speak up in a meeting against bad advice. Take screenshots of all Zoom calls. Get proof of any job fairs you go to. Save every single email. Both times they wanted me to pay back all of the unemployment they gave me, and both times I had enough proof they were wrong to get them to fuck off.
