Who is a capitalist?

Who can call themselves a capitalist? I can define capitalism for myself, for example as a system of societal organisation in which capital owners create the rules, and the others must compete in markets to have the right to life that they should have just by being alive. In this case, the capitalist is the capital owner and receiver. They are the people who are directly responsible for upholding the societal structure and persuade people to partake in the culture. But when I look at my friends on the right who would actively argue for a free market system, are they capitalists, or are they just people? They make no more money than I do, I'm sure they're no less empathetic than me, I'm sure it's a matter of upbringing and how the things we perceive as facts differ.
