Why are American houses comparatively not more expensive than European houses despite being much bigger, on average?

I know that houses can be VERY expensive in America, don't take me wrong. In fact, the real estate market has been incredibly unfair to a lot of people the last 5 years, but I do have a question: Why, comparatively, are houses in America twice as big as houses in Europe for the same price, in a lot of cases? nb: I obviously need to mention that I'm not taking the extremely expensive cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, San Fransisco as a reference. Those cities are probably several times more expensive than your average American town.
