Why are managers so frequently incompetent and insufferable?

I know there are various reasons why they rise up the ranks (they’re more likely to be cutthroat or overestimate their competence or scare off the competition, or maybe their manager is equally obnoxious or is trying to look out for their own job security) but most of the managers I’ve had – in addition to being intolerable – weren’t even charismatic or inspiring. There were essentially no positive qualities to them that I was aware of. I was recently working at adidas and the manager of 2 stores was so pestilent that every single employee quit within the same month and the stores had to close for a while I realise being a manger isn’t easy and isn’t for everyone but in many of the jobs I’ve had it seems as if they’ve found the worst person they possibly could for the role as some elaborate practical joke on…

Or is this just another testament to the stupidity of most human beings
