Why do companies always treat their best employees like trash?

Every time I join a new company I feel this one is different but no. They all are same every single time. I’m a senior consultant so I am satisfied with my job but I had a new colleague joined few months after me. He had exactly same experience and even more skills than me but he was offered junior position (not even normal consultant). He was pissed but had no choice. He worked so hard past 2 years, did research, technical conferences and stuffs which not even seniors were doing. Was best employee of the quarter multiple times while rest of the seniors were not even nominated single time. In his recent appraisal he was refused promotion which even made me so angry. On top of that they keep hiring new senior consultants who don’t know jack shit while giving my friend pennies in appraisal. Why they always do…

Why they always do this? What do they really gain from this? Definitely not the money issue when they’re still hiring seniors who yet have to prove themselves.
