Why do people act different once they obtain higher education?

As a school aide it astonishes me how some teachers are so arrogant and act high and mighty with certain school staff who are “lower” than them. I really want to know what is the psychology behind it? I also notice this in people who obtain masters of doctorate degrees. Can anyone enlighten me?
