I know so many people who take such pride and sense of identity for being a diehard worker who gives it their all, never phones in sick, rarely takes holidays etc but don’t actually seem to get any benefits from it.
I do my job very well, I’m competent in my role and constantly look to improve my skills and have been rewarded for doing so financially.
As far as dedication goes. I’m on time everyday but I leave on time everyday. I don’t do beyond what is reasonable, I take holidays and have no issues with being off sick for however long is needed. I’m of the mindset that this is an exchange of skills for money.
Is this just a weird people pleasing defect, a personal boundary issue or have these people been brainwashed?
I could understand if this was about greed or personal gain but these people I know don’t own homes, have no retirement funds and don’t seem to grasp that if their dedication isn’t resulting in social good or proportion financial benefit for their effort they are just being taken advantage of…
