Why do we have to “request” time off?

I’ve been in the workforce for over 30 years and it has always rubbed me the wrong way that workers need to “request” time off. Doesn’t that phrasing seem odd to you? It’s my life so I should be just telling my employer that I will be taking off x days. Not requesting. Not giving them a choice. Not asking if I can. Paid or unpaid time off shouldn’t be a request. You don’t own my time.
