Why do you need my references? All I did was apply to a job posting.

Basically as the title says. Applied to a job and they immediately send an email and ask for references. Haven't been on an interview yet. Haven't even had a phone call to discuss an interview…. They need references. Is this normal? I don't feel like this is normal.
