So the ability for grocery and convenience stores to sell wine passed in CO. The beer law passed a few years ago. Hard liquor is the only thing that gives liquor stores a leg up from the competition.
Most liquor stores here are small family owned businesses. Whereas grocery stores and most convenience stores are owned by corporations such as Kroger’s.
Colorado is a blue state- with all this anti corporation talk, why are laws like this getting passed?
I’ve spoken to a couple of anti-capitalism folks in CO who voted for it and their reason is the convenience of purchasing liquor and groceries at one place. Most liquor stores here are within walking distance, in the same shopping center of a grocery store.
I understand this is human nature and the reason why Amazon is still used but it’s just sad.
That means the adorable old couple who owns my local liquor store might go out of business. And these folks are old who were hoping to retire in 10years, but the husband has been applying elsewhere as a backup second job.
I’m just sad after talking with them tonight. They are good people and are trying to remain positive but it’s easy to see they’re scared.
There are so many little liquor stores like theirs everywhere in Colorado.
It’s disheartening to see that unless you have a solid business idea and more importantly- money and time to fund that idea, you have to remain under the thumb of a boss because corporations are taking over small businesses one law at a time.
