I work as a consultant at a relatively huge firm. I work extremely long hours and am very ambitious about my career. I also have only few friends in the office.
What irks me is that people expect me to work few hours and put in less effort so that they can feel better about themselves. Last week, the employees decided to skip work so that they can watch some sports thingy together. I obviously opted out. Even the manager wanted to go.
My friend recently told me that my team mates think I am so extra, and that I need to get a life. I feel that they are just jealous about my billables. She also told me that everyone's work is getting harder due to me as management clearly expects the same from them.
Why don't they move to another job where they can find more balance, and expectations are less. A consultant's work is challenging (especially in tax). I told my friend the same, and she said that I have no concern for others. I don't understand their logic, they expect me to be bad at my job and expect me not to make sacrifices so that they can continue to make the same decisions that they do.
All of this reminds of the way I was bullied at school. It is just the majority of them gang up together and expect me to do as they wish.
