Why unemployment makes a person less desirable by the employers?

Many people lose their jobs due to downsizing, lay-offs, toxic bosses etc. People have illnesses. Sometimes people are unemployed because they are taking care of their loved ones. Now why unemployment makes a person less desirable by the employers? This bias against the unemployed people is a critical component of the toxic and subhuman working conditions, i.e. workers accept too much shit because they are afraid to be unemployed. Compare the stigma of being unemployed and being a former convict in the media: quite often you see news stories about reformed former inmates showing their face and name who are trying to live a life without crimes. Im not saying there is anything bad about this, to stay out of prison you need a job and livelyhood and it is good for the public to see stories that shed light to why some people chose the life of crime. But…

But how often you see an upstanding citizen in the news with his face and name talking about the struggles of being unemployment? Why the attitudes toward the unemployed people are so cruel still in this day and age?
