So to keep anonymity, let’s call this place CH (coffee hut). Skin case anyone doesn’t know what a coffee hut is….it’s a small drive through cafe where you serve out a window and no customers enter, typically small and fits about 2-3 people during shifts. With that being said you make decent money with tips so I decided to get a job there cause the hours were flexible and since I’m in school it should have worked out great. That’s where I messed up. Within my first week of working they asked me to work a solo shift overnight, alone. I was hesitant but I knew the money was good so I said sure, the shift went fine and I was glad to never do it again. Nope. They continuously asked me to work that shift and finally I said that I don’t feel comfortable with that shift and wanted to switch. That’s when I learned how my manager had favorites first hand. When I just started I knew some of the baristas were moved from hut to hut just so the mangers favorites could work together and other really shady shit like that. Once I fell from grace, she gave me the worst possible hut which was new and had barely any customers. I was okay with it at first but I told them I cannot stay at this hut, cause I will not make enough money. For reference a 8 hour shift at a normal hut is about $350, while at this hut I made $90 total. I stuck through it even with the pay cut cause they were really accommodating to my schedule. Then winter hit and my car was struggling to keep up with the snow and temperatures and I was very upfront saying I was constantly having vehicle issues especially in the morning when the temp is like 0-10 degrees Fahrenheit. One particular morning my car wasn’t starting, which had not happened before, so I called my manager and told them. I apologized and said I am working on my car rn but if I can’t get it running I won’t make it in. She sent a single text back “Uber.” Like…..??? You want me to pay $50 on an Uber to make $90 hell na. I said no and that I don’t get paid enough for that and she left me on read. The next shift I had i was able to get to it and had no issues until the end. I have class at 1:00 pm and was scheduled to get off at 12:30 but my manager “forgot to tell the barista coming in about the schedule” …..like how??? Then nearly every shift after that the baristas would come in 30 min to an hour late and I always ended up missing class. Eventually I started closing the hut down even though I was not supposed to just so I could make it to class. My manager got all mad at me and finally the barista’s schedules were all fixed magically. I was nearly over it and was getting really agitated and was about to quit. Wish I did. The next week the heater for the hut was taken and the huts only heat was coming from an espresso machine. I would open the hut and it would be barely 40 degrees Fahrenheit inside. Keep in mind I constantly open the window in freezing temperatures so the entire shift was in a hut barely above freezing. Later I learned that the heater from my hut was taken by MY MANAGER just to give a second heater to one of their favorite huts. I was pissed and asked my manager to replace the heater and they replied “the power isn’t strong enough so just wait for it to get fixed” 2 weeks went by and I finally was sick of it. I got a job from one of my customers and put my two weeks in. In which my manager didn’t say a single word to me. On my last day I finished my shift and the next person to work didn’t show up and I was never notified. I just left. I was so sick of their shit and am so happy to not work there anymore
Moral of the story, i should have quit way sooner but at least my customer got me a way better job.
