Work doesn’t care that someone nearly had a bad accident

Pretty much we work in a restaurant and recently our hours have been long, the work has been super busy and we don't really have breaktimes or a place to take a break in. We can run out in our uniforms out into the open but it's always raining and it's close to 0 Celsius. Doesn't stop us though from going outside and try to decompress for even just a second and maybe survive a bit longer. We are not just short staffed anymore, we're beyond that so boss literally cannot deal if someone gets sick. What is his plan? Guilt tripping of course. Coworker got sick and still came in, high on meds and energy drinks, he was thanked and later, when he himself asked to please let him go after the guests had left, he was “graciously” allowed to do it. Graciously, because he was just as sick…

Graciously, because he was just as sick two days ago and couldn't function anymore and had to leave early again.

Well, on his way home, he ran into a pole. He isn't harmed besides being shaken up and the car also survived minus one light, but it happened because he couldn't be alert enough to drive or to do anything, really… Yes, there should have been something else to be done, but public transport to his place doesn't exist from our workplace after midnight and he couldn't really stop on the highway since he would have been freezing with his car turned off.

He wrote to the boss who just replied basically something along the lines of “but think about the guests! And us! We can't do this without you, you need to come in, do you need money for a train ride?” just longer and more emphasis on how he is screwing everyone over.

He told me today that he is sorry but he isn't willing to put himself at risk, he has done it yesterday and it could have been worse. Much worse. And I agree. A job is a job, if boss can't absolve a sick person, then it's not the sick employee's job to provide labor.

I'm so mad about it all, about how uncaring and unfeeling someone could be. I hope this place burns to the ground.
