Some disclaimers before I start:
1) this is a throwaway account just in case anyone from work finds my og account
2) I'm writing on mobile, so there may be some editing errors
3) All this is in Brazil
With that out of the way, here we go.
I work in an ESL school. This means that all students are there specifically to learn English. There are people from all ages, with classes that can be scheduled from 8am to 8 pm (all with 1 hour duration) on weekdays and from 8am to 5 pm on Saturdays.
My workweek is kinda long (44h/week, the maximum labor laws allow) and I work all the six days, with shifts during the afternoon/ evening from Monday to Friday and the whole day on Saturdays. With that, I'm always too tired to have social life, especially because most my friends have normal work hours.
In the last months, the climate at the company has been changing. The bosses are always on the “you're not doing enough” kind of attitude, even though we are working with equipment that keep failing (the projectors for class have old bulbs, so they don't really work that well; or ACs that just don't cool a windowless classroom, and so on).
The company had always had the culture of, in the holiday season in December, giving 15 days/two weeks off to all employees. 2022 was the 1st time it didn't happen.
Salaries started becoming late. FGTS (the Brazilian equivalent to the 401k, that here is mandatory for the company to pay) isn't being paid. And the bosses are always complaining about minor things, like “you shouldn't wait for the students on the reception, you should be in your classroom”, or “don't sit down during class and don't turn your back to the students”.
This week has been a nightmare. The coordinator has been scheduling classes wrong (wrong lesson/unit to be given that day, a class scheduled without any of the students that were supposed to be there in the roster, stuff like that). And, the cherry on top is that it is March and we don't have a school calendar for the semester.
Yes, you read it right. In March, there's still no calendar for the semester, no clue of when things are supposed to happen, or even if they're going to happen. (Will there be a St. Patrick's day or Easter activity? We have no clue)
And now, there is a person that only now, one whole month after classes have started, is making the “census” of which kids are in which level and which days of the week; if any of them is missing their book and all that. And the information, that is mostly in the system, is asked to us teachers, that have to respond ASAP, or we will hear an earfull for not answering shit that's already updated daily and multiple times a day.
