Work from Home question

So I seem to remember back in the COVID lockdown that some companies were offering to let their employees switch to WFH if they would take a pay cut because then the employee could live in lower cost of living zip codes. Or maybe it was the employees offering to take lower salaries to switch to WFH. Did anybody actually do that? If so, are those same companies that are now telling their WFH employees they have to transition back into the office, are they offering to pay more money?
